Again Hardy speaks of a love who has died, poignant in its expression of the unexpectedness of death. Finzi's setting is a fairly early one, being dated 1928 in the manuscript. It is one of his shorter songs, only twenty-four measures, with a folk-like quality to the vocal line. The lines are drawn out at places, either to fit the text or to accommodate Finzi's technique of using a cesura for dramatic emphasis. This device, seen in example 40, became one of the characteristics of his style.
