General comment on style
The following are comments by Curtis Alan Scheib regarding the song set I Said to Love. Dr. Scheib extended permission to post this excerpt from his dissertation on February 17th, 2012. His dissertation dated 1999, is entitled:
Gerald Finzi's Songs For Baritone On Texts By Thomas Hardy: An Historical And Literary Analysis And Its Effect On Their Interpretation
This excerpt can be found on page seventy.
On Gerald Finzi's death in 1956, there were some tow dozen songs that he had completed, but were left unpublished and in manuscript. They were collected into sets and made ready for publication by his wife Joy, his son Christopher, and by his long time colleague and friend, Howard Ferguson. I Said to Love was published by Boosey and Hawkes in 1958 and contains six Hardy songs for low voice. As in the Hardy sets published during Finzi's lifetime, the six songs were written in various periods of the composer's life. The first performance was given by John Carol Case and Howard Ferguson at a Finzi memorial concert held at the Victoria and Albert Museum on 27 January 1957. (Banfield, 486)
